A wall with a notebook

Suwon gives my folded map a useful companion: a record of how things were made. King Jeongjo built Hwaseong in the late eighteenth century. Its stone and brick walls served a city with homes, trade and administration as well as defence. A detailed construction record, published in 1801, later helped guide restoration.

Near the Hwahongmun watergate, the story of a wall also meets the story of a stream. Look from an open public path, then stop before opening your notebook. You do not have to complete the wall's full circuit to notice the care in one small section.

I would save a simple drawing with a helpful note beneath it. Perhaps the most useful souvenir is something that helps us understand, or care for, what comes next.
